PHOENIX (May 2, 2024) - In celebration of National Small Business Week, April 28-May 4, The Colibri Collective announced that the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has honored CEO and founder, Gaby Cardenas, with the Arizona Minority Small Business Champion of the Year award.
“I founded The Colibri Collective seven years ago to give an opportunity to women of color and people of diverse backgrounds,” said Cardenas. “As the Valley’s first Latina-owned, digital marketing agency, I am deeply honored to have been recognized with this prestigious award by the SBA.”
Geoff McGivern, Senior Vice President of Business Development at TMC Financing, nominated Cardenas for this distinguished award, with letters of support from Adrian Fontes, Arizona Secretary of State, and Mary L. Mitchell, Co-CEO of Girl Scouts Arizona Cactus-Pine.
Fontes, who currently oversees the business services division for Arizona, said “Gaby took the bold and often misunderstood step to start her own business in 2017. I have witnessed Gaby’s work in the professional space and her passion to be an inspiration to the next generation of business leaders. She is relentless in her desire to give back to the community.”
Cardenas’ journey is the true immigrant American success story. Born in Mexico City, she grew up in Southern California and Peoria, Arizona, before finding a passion for marketing. She founded The Colibri Collective in 2017 from her kitchen table and has since grown the company to 17 states.
The Colibri Collective is a full-service marketing agency that focuses on creating positive change through meaningful partnerships and delivering strategies that create results for a diverse set of clientele. With a commitment to creating positive change, Cardenas’ focus extends beyond profit margins to meaningful partnerships. Specializing in marketing for causes that aim to build a better world, The Colibri Collective boasts a diverse portfolio, including K-12 and higher education institutions, human rights advocacy organizations, political, and healthcare services, transit, foundations, and nonprofits.
“It is an honor to recognize Gaby and The Colibri Collective with a National Small Business Week award,” said Robert J. Blaney, the District Director of the SBA in Arizona. “They are risk takers, innovators and employers who fuel our economy and daily serve our communities as mentors and leaders. We celebrate her success and thank her for her commitment.”
More than 99% of the businesses in Arizona are small businesses - businesses that drive innovations and job growth; that are vital to the state’s dynamic economy. The SBA honored Arizona entrepreneurs, small business champions, and lending partners for their contributions to the economy. The Colibri Collective and the other winners will be recognized during the local National Small Business Week awards presentation at the annual AZ Small Biz Con 2024 hosted by the Arizona Small Business Association (ASBA) on May 2, 2024.
